KDE 4.3 was released 3 days ago, bringing integration with other technologies, such as PolicyKit, NetworkManager & Geolocation services, was another focus of this release. KRunner’s interface has been overhauled. A much more flexible system tray has been developed. Many new Plasmoids have been added, including the openDesktop.org Plasmoid – an initial take on the Social Desktop. Plasma also receives more keyboard shortcuts.

Unfortunately if you are on Ubuntu Jaunty (or Kubuntu), you will not officially get KDE 4.3. It will be featured in the upcoming Koala version scheduled in October. However you can get your hands on the latest KDE offering now on your 9.04 desktop. But let us take a quick look at some screenshots.

Upgrading to KDE 4.3

First you will need to add the repos to your sources.list file:
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu jaunty main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list"
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/staging/ubuntu jaunty main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list"

Add the GPG key:
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 8AC93F7A

And upgrade:
sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude dist-upgrade

Or if you don’t have KDE installed in the first place:

sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop

And they say that the command line is hard! Easy as 1-2-3!

Here is a quick video of KDE 4.3 in action, enjoy!

Thanks for the guide. It's my first time actually installing and using KDE and it is amazing. Too bad I didn't do this before. The desktop and apps look a lot better and the applications themselves are quite a bit more powerfull. I think Canonical should put much more focus on KDE than they do now.

Maybe one day Canonical will put more effort on KDE, but why does it really matter? You can build your own ;)

Thanks a lot for the nice video demo.

I tried the first command and I got “permission denied” isn't sudo supposed to let you type in the root password? How else would you do it?

Dave, try adding the repos manually using “sudo gedit /etc/apt/source.list”

Tell me how that works for you :)

Thanks, I got KDE to run, but its not very good. How can I remove it ? I'll stay with Gnome instead.

If you want good KDE go with Mandriva 2009.1 … it does a better job.

Ubuntu likes Gnome and Xfce better than KDE.

Um… The video was 98% compiz-fusion demonstration, 2% KDE. And honestly, the little KDE I saw wasn't really anything revolutionary…

Maybe someone should piece together a video showing the actual new features and benefits of KDE itself (without compiz).

Actually thats KWIN really, not Compiz

Just wanted to say your instructions worked perfect! Thank you

      Glad it worked :)

I went back to Gnome. I have KDE4 on another PC running Mandriva 2009.1 It's a better KDE OS than Kubuntu from what I've seen.

Maybe once Kubuntu 9.10 comes out Oct 29, it will be better. Otherwise I'm happier running Xubuntu.

Ran these commands on a mint 7 'gloria' distribution and it killed my desktop. No more cashew in the corner, no more widgets, no more wallpaper, no more response from a right click on the desktop. The panel is still there but when I click on the menu button the menu appears at the top of the screen – wierd.

I ran into a problem with the libindi0 package dependency. it's relatively easy to fix though. just follow the help here: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic

I followed your instructions to the letter, installing in a fresh
Ubuntu 9.04 install. When I try to boot, I get the message:
“Checking battery state”. Hangs forever. Any suggestions?
