Chromium: Google’s Browser on Linux and Mac!

Published on September 28, 2008 in Software by Rami Taibah

I am sure a lot of Linux and Mac users were a bit disappointed on September the 2nd, they were shut out in favor of their more popular counterparts; Windows users. Google’s browser, Chrome, took the Internet by storm. Everybody was talking about it, Digg got swamped with Chrome submissions, Tech blogs were buzzing about it, theories were thrown left and right. Everybody was in for the action, except for Linux and Mac users! :(

However Jeremy White, the CEO of Codeweavers, decided to take matters into his own hands. So on September 4th he summoned his army to get Chromium (which is the open source project behind Chrome) ported to Linux and Mac ASAP. Long story short, they achieved that in only 11 days! Boy Wine has matured! :)

Anyways enough talk, if you want a piece of the action you just simply need to download Chromium from Codeweaver’s servers:

Google Chrome for Apple Mac OS X:
1. CrossOver Chromium for Apple Mac OS X

Google Chrome for Linux:
1. CrossOver Chromium for Ubuntu and Debian (32 bit)
2. CrossOver Chromium for Ubuntu and Debian (64 bit)
3. CrossOver Chromium for Red Hat, Mandriva, and Suse
4. CrossOver Chromium for all other Linux distros.

Warning: Chromium should not be used as a main browser, it is not stable enough. From Codeweaver’s Faqs:

Q. Should I run CrossOver Chromium as my main browser?

A. Absolutely not! This is just a proof of concept, for fun, and to showcase what Wine can do. Chromium itself is just beginning. As the Chromium project progresses, they will be providing more compelling support for Mac OS and Linux, particularly with process security and memory management. Those future versions from Chromium will be better suited for daily use than this version.

I installed this about a week ago. The only thing missing was flash.

I fixed that by downloading the Flash xpi. (The xpi can be found using Google. Search for flash xpi. The download link is from macromedia.com.)

Changed the extension from xpi to zip. Extracted the file, located NPSWF32.dll and moved it to
    ~/.cxchromium/chromium/drive_c/chromium/plugins

I hope that helps anyone trying to use the browser.

Sweet, I’ve been waiting for this for my Ubuntu system, thanks.

This only took 11 days because it’s not a native port. This is Chrome running on top of a WINE stack with a few modifications.

@rovr138, that’s a great tip! I’ll test it out and include it into the article :)

@Tyler, this is just the beginning, I expect more. Much more

@Oli, Isn’t that implied with the mention of Codeweaver ;) . The point is that it works! Probably not for everyday use, but for testing and whatnot :)

Does this work for PowerPc Macs? I downloaded and installed the Chromium application, but when I try to open it I get an error message which says: “You cannot open the application ‘CrossOver Chromium’ because it is not supported on this architecture.”

I’m on a 1.67 powerbook 15 with Leopard running. Can this work??? Please advise.

  • arjan

zoey, no it cannot. Wine emulates a windows enviroment and thus X86 instructions are required to run it. PPC macs don’t have these instructions.

Can this run on Wine as opposed to CrossOver?

This is an alternative solution, no doubt; I would still prefer to have a pre-compiled package of Chrome in Linux distribution or a Macintosh version binary.

I believe Wine can be used as opposed to Crossover.

That’s cheating, Chrome almost runs in Wine 1.1.5, it took eleven days for them to create the remaining code to make it run. Let’s see how much time they will wait before they commit this code to Wine :)

Wrapping “wine chromium.exe” in a one line script is not “porting”. What the fuck is the matter with you?

  • Birdy…

Well…This doesn’t work on my MAC. I dowloaded it twice and I keep getting the same message that says “Application is damaged or incomplete.”

Can you tell me what operating systems is this suppose to run on?

    Thanks,

    Birdy…

Wow, great PR for the Wine/CrossOver projects and something to play with for us Linux/Osx types!

But, for me, it’s not working yet:
First hist of trouble is no new menu item to run it. Assuming:
    /opt/cxchromium/support/chromium/drive_c/chromium/chrome.exe &
is right, it still fails with two warnings:

Google Chrome does not support Windows 2000. Some features may not work.

Whoa! Google Chrome has crashed. Restart now?

Agreeing to Restart just repeats the same warnings.
I’m running it on 32bit Ubuntu hardy on new hardware with 4gig Ram. I’ve had other apps working under Wine for awhile, so could that be conflicting with CrossOver?

I’m so not impressed by Google’s Chrome and even less impressed that it’ll run on Wine. Wine has come a long way no doubt and this shouldn’t be unexpected. While it may not have worked initially with Wine it was bound to work eventually. Chrome isn’t even out of beta so who cares? Had Wine supported it out of the box it would have been more interesting. I did try Chrome and I’m not touching it.

This is a neat tip. Would you consider posting any more tips you write to http://ubuntukungfu.org? This is a Digg-like site where people can submit and vote for Ubuntu tips, tricks etc. Cheers!

Trouble running it on Linux, try from a terminal:

    /opt/cxchromium/bin/wine –cx-app chrome

    or

    ~/cxchromium/bin/wine –cx-app chrome

    You may need to add:

    –no-sandbox –in-process-plugins

Trouble on a Mac? If it’s a PowerPC (G3, G4, G5) CrossOver Chromium will not run. If it’s an Intel Mac and on 10.5.5, it may have some issue.

Chromium (Chrome) runs on Wine, but has issues with https. I believe the fix for this has been submitted to Wine already. No reason to keep it secret.
