Howto: Add Your Facebook Friends to Pidgin

Published on July 24, 2009 in Apps by Rami Taibah

Pidgin-Facebook-Chat

This is pretty straight forward yet awesome! Get all your friends on a real chat client instead of that annoying and crippled Facebook chat window! All you need to do is install a little package called pidgin-facebook. If you are on a Debian system just download this package and install it using the GUI or the “dpkg -i” command and you are set! If you are on a Red Hat system, use Alien. For anything else just install from source.

You might also want to install the Facebook icons for Pidgin. Extract it to /usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/protocols

  • there is a packet in new ubuntu versions -> sudo aptitude install pidgin-facebookchat
  • A very simple and easy way to add this great feature to pidgin. Theres no need to add "geeks terminal codes" to make this.
  • Adrian Nowak
For me all work great, thanks :)
  • Glad I could help, Adrian :)
  • I got a dependency error on Ubuntu 9.04 (64 bit)

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of pidgin-facebookchat:
    pidgin-facebookchat depends on libjson-glib-1.0-0; however:
    Package libjson-glib-1.0-0 is not installed.

So I installed that lib. and that worked -- then I installed the .deb file using dpkg. And that appears to work. Quit and restarted Pidgin - and nothing new there.

Yes I did extract the pixmaps too.

  • This might sound stupid. But did you add your Facebook account in Pidgin?
