MS Using Macbook Pro In Promotional Material?

Published on November 15, 2008 in Humor by Rami Taibah

I know that this is a Linux blog, and thats what readers have come to expect. But sometimes one encounters stuff that is just too good to pass. So that other day my dad bought a new HP Pavilion desktop, and since I am the geek in residence I ended up setting it up for him. So while I was waiting for Microsoft’s endless configuration and setup screens I decided to dig into the fluffy paraphernalia  and promotional material bundled with the Desktop. The first thing that fell into my hand was this Microsoft Vista promotional booklet that had an image of the ideal happy family computing on a laptop. What stood out was that the laptop looked awfully similar to the Macbook Pro! In fact I am 90% sure that its a Mac!

Edit 1: Commenters on this blog, Digg, and Reddit, were quick to point out that Vista runs on Macs, and PS controllers can run on PCs. But that’s hardly the point. The point is as ctrlalteredmind puts it “hinting at the competition’s products is not something you want to do in your own marketing handouts.

Now let’s argue on what constitutes a competitor ;)

Edit 2: The word is in! It’s definitely a Mac! Skemez1 dug up another picture from a European retailer. It’s obviously a Macbook! The trackpad, the ports, and the power button gives it away.

Oh and while we are at it, last time I checked Microsoft had a gaming division. So why the hell are they using Playstation joysticks on the last page?

That could be a pc. Apple isn’t the only company that makes silver laptops. Also those gaming controllers could be pc controllers. There are many that look just like playstation controllers.

  • http://hehe2.net Rami Taibah

True there are other silver PC’s out there, but take a look at the keyboard, they have the same shape of a Macbook Pro.

And besides thats not really the point, its a screwup, I mean do you want to tell me that the marketing department was like “alright guys lets do a photoshoot and use a laptop similar to the mac book pro and don’t forget the Xbox 360 Playstation look-alike joysticks!!”

  • secretmode

    thats a macbook pro.

  • churnedrock

    prove it

  • http://www.reviewtheproducts.com nsane

First of all, if that is really a Mac and PS controllers, than I believe the posters are fake.

If not, I have seen laptops with that kind of layout and most PC gaming controllers have a PlayStation controller look.

  • Athel

The first laptop looks like my Dell laptop from work.

2ndly I don’t see any mention of it being a 360 ad, it says pc. And my pc controllers look like a ps2 controller. I’ll take pictures of both if you like.

  • coffee

surely not a photoshoot. they probably just bought some stock photos.

  • Toadkiller

That’s the joy of using stock photography and outsourced marketing.

  • Ahmad Tawakol

That’s definitely a MacBook Pro. You can tell from the keyboard and the lack of windows stickers on it, lol.

  • Charlie Edwards

The graphic designer used a stock photo. Big deal.

  • Jeremy

You know how you can definitely tell it’s not a PC laptop? It appears to be working correctly and the users seem to be enjoying themselves : )

  • Joshua Kapellen

That’s no doubt a Mac. Look at the thin display enclosure with it’s rounded corners. That and they’re smiling, people don’t usually smile at windows machines. ;)

As for the gamepads, they could be PC peripherals. I have a dual stick controller that looks just like that, I think it’s a Logitech dual pad or something like that.

I’m guessing these were stock photos licensed by Microsoft, they certainly look like stock fodder.

  • Joe the Plumber

Probably just some stock images lifted for the ads.

  • James Tillman

The controllers look like Logitech Rumblepad 2′s.

  • Sarah

I think it’s highly possible that these are just public domain pictures. A lot of companies just grab those and use them without putting too much thought into it. I doubt they did any kind of photo shoot for the booklet.

  • Steve

Could be Vista running on Bootcamp :-)

  • Jay

That is absolutely 100% for sure a MacBook Pro in the first pic. I have the same laptop under my fingers this very moment.

  • jon

that is without doubt a MacBook PRO! bah!

  • Cory

Is it a macbook pro? I just recently saw a Sony laptop that looked strangely like a macbook pro… and I have had PC gamepads that look just like playstation controllers. Of course since Microsoft has a gaming division and produces Xbox controllers for PC…

  • Geronimo Sawyer

The playstation joystick is bad. But what’s wrong with using a MacBook? MacBooks can run Windows too, you know.

In fact, they’re probably the sexiest thing to run Windows on!

  • http://www.visualdesigncore.com missionsix

    lol

  • Craig

Yeah, thats a macbook. I have seen that quite a bit actually. I think its because Apple laptops are the only ones out there that actually look nice.

  • Andrew

  • http://www.lemonlimedesigns.ca ash

  • http://www.ntopics.com ntopics

I think you’re right! I was at an Apple retailer the other day, and that laptop looks just like a Macbook Pro. An interesting point I learned there is that you can run Microsoft Vista on a Macbook Pro as a virtual operating system. Of course they claimed Microsoft Vista would actually run better on their machines versus a PC.

  • Sic

That could be a Sony VAIO – they have very similar loooking keyboards. As for the controllers…agreed… who cares if they’re not Sony controllers they sure as hell look like them. Mind you they may be playing on the popularity of the PS2, but i doubt it.

  • anon

It’s called stock photography. MSFT marketing dept, or an outside company doing these ads was just lazy in selecting theirs.

  • http://www.zylstrablog.co.nr Zylstra

There are a few Mac-Lookalike PC’s and Laptops out there.

    Nevertheless, Mac does run Vista.
Microsoft doesnt make computers or individual internal components for computers, and thus, it wouldent matter if they had a Mac in their ad.

  • Johnny Reb

Maybe it’s a microsoft jab at Apple–they’re using our OS on your crappy laptop!!!

  • G0rbachev

    ok… its vista not pc…
macs run vista too if youre not an idiot.

  • http://www.davelinger.com Dave Linger

Keep in mind that PS3 controllers are Bluetooth, and therefore can be used with games on Windows Vista. Sure it may have made more sense to use 360 controllers, but it’s not like PS3 controllers are wrong.

  • j

Look folks. Take it from a certified Apple technician and someone who works on Mac’s 8 hours a day for a living, that is a MacBook Pro. That is why this family is so happy. Their computer is virus free and their not using Vista.

  • A

There’s only one notebook on the market with silver keys on the board

    MACBOOK PRO

  • http://whatan00b.com/ Wyatt

Haha definitely a MacBook Pro. They also ran this ad some time back with what looks like a MacBook:

    http://www.tuaw.com/2007/03/05/microsoft-the-wow-starts-with-a-macbook/

I’m sure they’re just stock photos of people having fun with computers that MS picked up..

  • Jim McDOsh

Wow, you hit the nail on thehead

    http://www.privacy.cz.tc

  • Tristan

…Even if it’s a bit stupid for an ad, you can perfectly run Vista on Mac hardware (thanks to bootcamp, parrallels, vmware for example) .

Also, I’ve seen those playstation pads-like ( complete, possibly legal, rip-off the original ps pads) for PC.

But yeah, it’s probably a screw up :-)

  • bduddy

Really? Because I’m typing on silver keys right now, and I don’t think Dell makes Macbooks…

  • DC

can’t you run Vista on a Mac?

  • http://hehe2.net Rami Taibah

Thats not the point. The point is that marketing is about attention to detail, which is not the case here.

  • http://http//www.delphcsage.com/home/blog.aspx scotty

    one word: bootcamp!

  • http://www.thumprmag.com Zack Curl

That most definately is a Macbook Pro, due to the fact that when I zoomed in on the photo, the keys were the same (in fact, I saw what seemed to be the Command key, which looks like an Apple). That and the curve-beveled edge gives it away. It is OEM because of the Genuine logo in the bottom right. Microsoft just can’t get enough of Apple.

A good possibility is that Microsoft didn’t want to pay for photos, so they got some already made ones and slapped them on. Everybody knows that Apple computers are better anyway…

  • http://www.tff4.com Tom

It probably has more to do with the fact that some poor schmuck junior designer was given about 5 minutes to create this project because someone in marketing forgot about a deadline, and they simply hopped on Veer or had to hit up a stock image CD already in the library of their design dept. It’s all circumstantial. Should it be better though out? Probably. But all too often as designers we’re given a minimal amount to work with as opposed to what would be ideal.

  • Anon

And those are logitech joysticks which look very very similar to playstation ones

  • kyle

For the laptop, you can run Vista on a Mac, and Microsoft doesn’t sell PC hardware

But yea, the PS gamepads should be XBox controllers

  • Garison

In the real world, when putting together an ad or brochure, the marketing department relies on royalty-free image banks. They do this for many reasons: it’s easier and cheaper; they don’t have photographers and models on hand; and there are no happy families in Redmond.

The marketing department picked photos that looked good, and implied what they wanted the reader to infer. They didn’t pay any attention to the computer equipment in the photos, only the people.

  • jagenigma

Isn’t it okay to use macbooks for vista ads because you can use windows on a Mac?

  • TurboBorland

Looks like my Dell laptop shaded poorly…
    Inspiron E1505
Also for the Playstation controllers, maybe they’re just trying to show that it can handle other platforms? It could also be look more open to other competitors and not just everything must be Microsoft. Makes them look more friendly. How many people are going to point out that, “Hey those look like Playstation controllers, that’s not a Microsoft product,” in comparison to, “Hey, those look like Playstation controllers, I wonder if I can play Playstation games on the new Windows OS!”?

  • Tom

    well, i would say it’s a mac

  • Brian

Obviously Microsoft’s marketing department uses Macs…

  • Abe

The laptop displayed in the first ad is indeed Apple’s Macbook Pro.
and the Second Picture does have a Playstation Controller. If you zoom into both pictures, you can see the keyboard for the laptop and you can also see the buttons on the remote as well.

    So much for microsoft. =(

  • P4n1ck

Or one of many recently similar looking Dell Inspiron laptops. The controllers could easily be the newer Logitech rumblepads

  • myself

My guess is that in both cases their marketing department used stock photography.

  • TurboBorland

If the joke is really about just using stock photos, than the author needs to clarify that. The way I read it made the article sound like just a stab at Microsoft using the iBlade.

Well, Macs can run Microsoft operating systems. Apple even promotes this versatility.

So if anyone should be embarrassed it should be the PC manufacturers that can make photogenic laptops.

  • XTabbedOutX

You do realize Microsoft is a software Co. They do not make hardware (They have M$ Branded hardware, but it is made by mainstream hardware manufactures). They actually make software for the Mac i.e. Office, RDC, Silverlight, etc. Plus everyone knows if you want XP or Vista to run properly you run it on an Apple. You know the fastest Vista has ever ran was on an Apple Computer.

  • http://reggio.web.id Reggio

    1. It could be a MacBook, but the keyboard doesn’t look like one. Apple’s keyboard is very distinct, the keys have some space between them. And as far as I know, MacBooks are WHITE and BLACK, haven’t seen a silver one. The picture looks more like a Dell to me.

    2. They are called gamepads, not joysticks. :)

Actually, a lot of the people that work at Microsoft use Macs. I think the point they are trying to make is that even though you may prefer Mac’s hardware, the Microsoft OS is superior. I, myself, use a Macbook with Vista installed on it.

  • http://WWW.FUNNYASSTEES.COM Shawn Kent

Usually when an advertising company puts together this material they do not do a shoot, they purchase the images from stock image companies like corbis.com. There are a few idiots here, the marketing staff at Microshaft who rubber stamped this and the artistic director who led the advertising team into producing the propaganda, shoddy, sloppy work. But what do you expect from a company like Microsoft?

  • Mick

Microsoft did not do a ‘photoshoot’,These are probably bought images from a generic photo service. Newspapers use them all the time.

I understand that Vista runs real well on a MBP. So what’s all the hubbub about?

  • james

    macbook pro

  • http://nakedpenguins.net Keith

Ok, I think few people could really tell the difference, however for the uber nerd, or the Linux guy that IMHO, pays attention to this kind of stuff, there are subtle differences that are important. Part of that is that Apple does not do generic cases. They may be simple but they always need to do things different. At very least, where are the stickers all over it saying Vista Capable? As little as there is to see, there SHOULD be some kind of branding in sight.

The issue here is marketing. People that do promotional photography want everything to be right. Think of the difference between the picture of the big mac in McDonalds, and that thing you get in a cardboard box. Very different.

Now, I am not a fan of Apple, or their bastardization of the FreeBSD OS, but their cases make anyone at Starbucks look very sophisticated.

I am most certain that is a Mac Book Pro. If it isn’t, it is some other mac I don’t know about (Hey, it could happen).

    FAIL!
U guys are fixated on the keys and their color. 2 easy to distinguish ways 2 tell its not a crapbook pro (really the only non-blurry parts of laptop pic):
    * compare top right corner of laptop casing (obv 2 parts meeting up) vs a crapbook’s construction (goog imgs)
    * focus on bottom row of keys and area beneath then to the “flat hand area” where glidepoint/mouse is positioned – very much unlike crapbook

While i had a hunch it may be a vaio – that hunch is incorrect after comparing those 2 areas as well.

I’m not certain that it is a Mac. But, with Apple using Intel chips in the Macbook Pro, their propaganda machine has been quick to claim it is the ideal laptop for running Vista.

What can I say, its a brave new world and we’re all having trouble adjusting.

  • arek

Vista runs very well on a Mac (Intel, that is).

This is stupid, software is a completely different section to OEM sales and the gaming division. It’s the same with google developing stuff for iPhone (i.e. the voice chat) and not releasing it on the android phone. Because Google Software is a completely different area to Google Android.

  • Hoppus

There was no Microsoft “photoshoot.” These are obviously stock images and there are websites full of pictures like these (e.g. http://www.fotosearch.com/photos-images/corporate.html). Have you noticed that almost all marketing material you see has the same style of photography?

In this case, its obvious that the graphic designer/marketer who chose these stock images is an idiot and didn’t stop and think for a second about what technologies were being represented. That is most definitely a Mac in the first photo.

  • tim

Sony has similar keyboards and very similar cases to the macbook pro – though often accused of borrowing wholesale from apple. They were the first to have the chicklet keyboard

  • http://travis.servebeer.com/blog.net/ Travis

I’m pretty sure that Mac’s have been assimilated and can run all kinds of windows nowadays either with Bootcamp, Parallels, or VM Ware. So I’m not sure what the big deal is anymore.

  • zz

I’m sure I’m just stating the obvious, but Microsoft is known to use a ton of stock photos in their promotional material, and have screwed up before: http://daringfireball.net/2002/10/microsoft_makeup

I think they just have a hard time finding genuinely happy, photogenic families of Windows users to use for their advertising or something.

So yes, those are probably a Mac and PS controllers in the brochures. It’s still retarded of them though.

  • Matt

The thing is, there probably wasn’t a photoshoot. The designer probably just bought whatever stock photo he thought looked the best. Chances are that Microsoft didn’t even make this themselves, some marketing firm probably did.

  • mac owner, and ps2 owner

That’s definitely a Macbook Pro, and some PS2 controllers… well at least Microsoft is being honest about the best devices to use, even if it is subtle, or maybe this is the marketer’s idea of a good joke. Cause I think its funny. And you know why that family is so funny, cause they’re using a computer running Leopard, not Vista!

  • HumanJHawkins

It is a Mac. It’s a stock photo from Getty Images. Search for image number 76551795 and you’ll see the whole computer. The image title is “Parents with son (8-9) using laptop, smiling.”

And the video game one? Also from Getty, image number 200456445-001 (“Two brothers (11-13) playing video game”). Can’t read any definitive Sony emblems on the controllers, though they do look like the real deal.

Someone in marketing wasn’t paying too close attention when they went looking for stock images. They just searched for images that conveyed the emotions they were looking for.

    Still, very funny.

  • Joshua

Microsoft uses clip art for their webpages. They have for years. What they’re looking for is happy faces and not too concerned about other objects or concepts in the picture.

  • aldkjf

As others have said they didn’t do a photoshoot…these are just stock images some marketing guy didn’t realize showed products that weren’t Microsoft’s.

  • Mitch

Those are stock photography. Some junior designer probably typed “gamer” and “computer” in to Getty and used whatever came up. Microsoft didn’t shoot those for their campaign. They probably barely looked at them before approving it for print. I can tell you first hand that the corporate types that approve these messages care more about getting off work at 3pm than doing their job correctly.

  • Gabe

Most of the time it’s not MS that makes the final decision. They take the words and ideas and send it to a marketing firm. The photos for the ad print were more likely stock photos in that if you look in a PS3 ad you may see the same photo. Those photos were not shot exclusively for MS.

  • kyle

they are likely stock photos rather than a shoot set up specifically for microsoft. many companies will just buy stock photos from archives for their adds to cut down on the cost of hiring a professional to so a specific shoot for them. i am POSITIVE microsoft would not be stupid enough to make these mistakes in a photo shoot that was done specifically for them.

  • Sterone

Packard Bell has laptops exactly like that in the picture. Anyhow, it’s stupid to use non-standard pc laptops in a picture like that.

  • YoJimbo

That is 100% for sure a MacBook Pro. No doubt about it. Mac laptops are simple, clean, and thus very photogenic. That is why they are used for the majority of stock photographs. Also most graphics houses use Macs so they knew what they were doing, I am pretty sure ;)

  • christopher talbot

it’s definitely a macbook pro. it’s used by so many other companies for aadvertising i bet that it’s just a stock image they used but didn’t do a good job of covering it up

  • bob

They are called StockPhotos. It may very well be a Mac, but the picture is free to use and it fits the ‘image’ the designer is looking to use. I think the designer did a very good job of making it non-biased.

  • General C#

Sony’s VAIO is the closest thing to a MacBook, and I think that there’s are a few Toshibas that have the look as well. There’s no excuse for the playstation joysticks though.
With a shody marketing job like this, there’s no wonder Microsoft’s in the crapper.

  • BC

I own a MBP and I had a very similar ad today in a PC I bought for family. My add showed more of the notebook and I am 100% positive it is a mbp with the apple logo airbrushed off. The mbp has a very distinct keyboard and trackpad. I think it is much less likely that an illegal knockoff of a patented keyboard would show up than it is likely that an mbp is used in the ad. These companies use purchased stock images. You could probably find the image for sale yourself with a bit of googling.

  • Tim

They didn’t set up a photoshoot, it’s called stock photography. Every agency uses it, these are just examples of designers that either didn’t notice (doubtful) or didn’t care (more likely) that the photos had competing products in them.

It’s possible to run Vista on a macbook pro. Maybe they were just showing off their operating system which operates outside a rigid line of under 10 machines (like OSX).

Also, there are PC gamepads that are direct clones of every console on the market today.

Finally, these are usually “stock computer and gaming” images that marketing departments throw together, not always with the end product presented to them first. It is more likely that whatever firm Microsoft contracted just pulled a few images out of their stockpile and were too technically illiterate to realize a problem.

Erm…Doesn’t the MBP have black keys? That looks like a Powerbook G4 to me…The keys are square and don’t have round corners, for one thing. And they’re silver. Not only that, but if you zoom in on the pic there’s a barely-visible outline of a trackpad that has a button, that is the smaller size type indicative of the Powerbook.

  • http://richardjhancock.com Richard

That is a Macbook Pro and PS Controllers. Either the photo shoot screwed up or they are using stock photos. Either way, a plus of Microsoft for admiting and realizing they lost the wars.

I think the most logical reason for all of this is that these were just stock photos that fit the image the marketing dept was trying to evoke. Most people in marketing departments use Macs, so usually in ads they just use Macs any time they need a computer so if you notice more often than IRL you will see macs in any form of ad where computers are required. the Playstation controllers are probably also stock photos. I don’t think this was on purpose.. it was definitely an accident that they overlooked.

  • geebs

So what you’re saying is that you can’t run Vista on a Macbook? Microsoft doesn’t manufacture hardware and Windows isn’t PC exclusive, yet since Mac makes both their OS proprietary to their hardware people impose the same limitations on Windows. It’s an Operating System…much like every flavor of linux…not a machine.

  • sean

Looks like my Vaio (once I removed all the labels they stick on the wrist rest area). Mine is silver also with chicklet keys.

Nope, I own one, nothing looks quite like a MacBook Pro. You have to remember, Microsoft doesn’t put these ads together, AD AGENCIES put them together, and honestly, they use whatever looks nice. Apples just look a lot nicer on television or print than most Windows machines. Then again, you can do dumb things, like the schlocky ads for FinallyFast.com, where they clearly show a white MacBook running Windows and BSODing. Sure, yeah, you can run Windows on a MacBook, but the people in the ad don’t look smart enough and it’s obviously been post-processed in.

  • Jan D.

They don’t take new pictures for this sort of thing – they use stock photos. So the problem wasn’t that they set up a photo shoot using other companies’ equipment but rather that someone didn’t check the stock photos well enough.

Either way, a major goof, at least in the case of the first photo

Totally a Macbook Pro. I actually use a Playstation controller on my PC tho, so I don’t really see the big deal in that being n the picture. IMHO the PS1/2 controller shape fits my hands best, and i’m sure some users prefer that type of controller regardless of the console/system. Hell, I’ve seen PS1/2 controllers modded for the xbox and the 360, just ’cause users like them better, so big deal.

J: Macs are not virus free. This is a common misconception that is propagated by those who “work on macs 8 hours a day”. i actually just spent three hours removing a virus from a mac last week, not to mention their susceptibility to dns hijacking which occurs constantly on our network.

while macs are less likely to get viruses, to propagate this belief that they are “virus-free” is misleading not only to owners, but to technicians who don’t find these things out for themselves until they have a virus staring them in the face and have no idea of how to remove it because “macs don’t get virii”.

Macs have their places just as PCs, but please don’t spread this “no virus” propaganda. It’s just a ridiculous supposition to any educated technician. Users love their Mac because they don’t have to worry about as much machine-management as windows users, who in turn don’t have to worry about a much machine-management as linux-distro users.

This is all user preference, some like the hands-off approach, some like to feel they have more control, some like the middle-ground. All OSes have their places, depending on the user’s knowledge and needs. Quit being a fan-boy.

  • Frank

  • Kirby Oak

You know, in the picture that Skemez1 provided, there’s a distinct lack of an Apple logo on the computer. Isn’t it possible that that’s just supposed to be a stock photo of a generic laptop? Beyond that, I’m sure that it’s better for Microsoft to suggest the hardware of their competitor than get in trouble with companies like Dell, HP, etc. for favoritism of a certain laptop manufacturer. Really though, since the material that these pictures are from comes with the software, it means you’ve already purchased it, so it doesn’t make much of a difference if they hint at Apple or Sony.

Also, this exploit: http://www.f-secure.com/vulnerabilities/SA30776 Which could be used to do all kinds of nasty things. also, not a virus, but if a user was affected by something such as this they could easily think they have a virus.

Plus, there was the Mac.Simpsons virus back in ’01, and Esperanto in ’97… and the list goes on. While they are rare, they do exist. I believe you have been mislead by this “mac=no virus” b.s. as well. do some research before making false claims. This isn’t big news. Anyone that has actually been “in the industry” knows this. Well, the image is too poor and it is also blended/faded. I do not see any “ports”, all I see are some keys and I think the color is white (could be silver). Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t.
