Use linux as an unpaid secretary!

I use linux with a legacy (aka analog) serial modem with caller-ID
capability, pringd (which listens in parallel for ring sequences on a
modem), index (which maintains simple databases), mysql (which
maintains not so simple databases), flite (a small, fast run-time
synthesis engine, a.k.a Festival Lite, for speech synthesis) and a
bash script to glue everything together to have the names of people
calling me (that are already known to me) announced through the
speakers (and logged).

All this on an old dinosaur system (AMD 450MHz, 32 MB) system, also used
for e-mail and web surfing (with lynx). It manages to lookup the
number of the caller in 3 local databases and say the name (if found)
before the third ring of the phone. Sweet!

Now if the above mentioned secretary could make me a cup of coffee or tea
every now and then...
